Indigenous mean birthweight percentile was 4.2 units lower (P<.0001). Adjustment for maternal age, smoking, body mass index, and infant sex reduced the difference in birthweight/percentiles to nonsignificance (12 g; P=.07). Conclusion: Disparities exist between indigenous and non-indigenous Australian infants for birthweight, birthweight percentile, and adverse outcome rates. Adjustment for smoking and maternal age removed any significant difference in birthweights and birthweight percentiles for indigenous infants. Our data indicate that birthweight percentiles should not be adjusted for indigenous ethnicity because this normalizes disadvantage; because White and indigenous Australians have diverged for approximately 50,000 years, it is likely that the same conclusions apply to other ethnic groups. The disparities in birthweight percentiles that are associated with smoking will likely perpetuate indigenous disadvantage into the future because low birthweight is linked to the development of chronic noncommunicable disease and poorer educational attainment; similar problems may affect other indigenous populations.]]> Tue 18 Oct 2022 11:09:49 AEDT ]]> Tell us about your nation's past: Swedish and Australian pre-service history teachers' conceptualisation of their national history https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:32498 Tue 12 Jun 2018 09:08:14 AEST ]]> Australian Sea Snake Envenoming Causes Myotoxicity and Non-Specific Systemic Symptoms - Australian Snakebite Project (ASP-24) https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:53624 2 years. Information about demographics, bite circumstances, species involved, clinical and laboratory features of envenoming, and treatment is collected and entered into a purpose-built database. Results: Between January 2002 and August 2020, 13 patients with suspected sea snake bite were recruited to ASP, 11 were male; median age was 30 years. Bites occurred in Queensland and Western Australia. All patients were in or around, coastal waters at the time of bite. The species involved was identified in two cases (both Hydrophis zweifeli). Local effects occurred in 9 patients: pain (5), swelling (5), bleeding (2), bruising (1). Envenoming occurred in eight patients and was characterised by non-specific systemic features (6) and myotoxicity (2). Myotoxicity was severe (peak CK 28200 and 48100 U/L) and rapid in onset (time to peak CK 13.5 and 15.1 h) in these two patients. Non-specific systemic features included nausea (6), headache (6), abdominal pain (3), and diaphoresis (2). Leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and lymphopenia occurred in both patients with myotoxicity and was evident on the first blood test. No patients developed neurotoxicity or coagulopathy. Early Seqirus antivenom therapy was associated with a lower peak creatine kinase. Conclusion: While relatively rare, sea snake envenoming is associated with significant morbidity and risk of mortality. Early antivenom appears to have a role in preventing severe myotoxicity and should be a goal of therapy.]]> Tue 12 Dec 2023 15:26:45 AEDT ]]> Health-related quality of life among Indigenous Australians diagnosed with cancer https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:24507 0.90). After adjusting for age, admission status, and treatment, excellent HRQoL was more likely among participants of Torres Strait Islander origin [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 3.68; 95 % CI 1.23–11.01], those living in regional areas (AOR 5.59; 95 % CI 1.42–22.06), and those whose main language spoken at home was not English (AOR 3.60; 95 % CI 1.08–11.99) and less likely among those reporting less contact with Indigenous people (AOR 0.23; 95 % CI 0.68–0.81). Conclusion: Assessing HRQoL is important to identifying and improving the length and quality of cancer survivorship, especially in groups that have significantly poorer cancer outcomes, such as Indigenous Australians. Acknowledging the study’s observational nature, we found HRQoL was lower than reported for other Australians, and we identified some socio-demographic factors that were associated with excellent HRQoL. Such assessments are an important component of identifying and evaluating appropriate interventions to improve the health and well-being of Indigenous cancer patients.]]> Thu 13 Jan 2022 10:30:32 AEDT ]]> Using the arts as a therapeutic tool for counselling: an Australian Aboriginal perspective https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:9527 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:35:33 AEDT ]]> Australian undergraduate biotechnology student attitudes towards the teaching of ethics https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:1133 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:32:02 AEDT ]]> Managerial attitude and support for social responsibility through the lens of legitimacy theory: a cross country comparison https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21398 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:05:03 AEDT ]]> Concepções em mudança do pensamento histórico no ensino da história: um estudo de caso australiano / Changing conceptions of historical thinking in History education: an Australian case study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21591 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:00:45 AEDT ]]> Considering Aboriginal palliative care models: the challenges for mainstream services https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:20265 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:59:54 AEDT ]]> Attitudes towards environmental responsibility within Australia and India: a comparative study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:18478 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:59:49 AEDT ]]> Changing conceptions of historical thinking in history education: an Australian case study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:20904 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:57:53 AEDT ]]> Teachers perceptions of a fundamental movement skill (FMS) assessment battery in a school setting https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:24060 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:09:38 AEDT ]]> “It’s not how old we are; it’s how we are old”: a salutogenic approach to how older Australian women experience ageing and respond to life stressors https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:29092 Mon 23 Sep 2019 13:00:40 AEST ]]> Australian oral health therapy students' experience of an overseas placement https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:50930 Mon 14 Aug 2023 10:30:42 AEST ]]> Alcohol management plans in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australian communities in Queensland: community residents have experienced favourable impacts but also suffered unfavourable ones https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:30593 Fri 22 Apr 2022 10:33:32 AEST ]]> Australian orthopaedic surgery training: Australian orthopaedic association's strategic education review https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:38416 Fri 10 Sep 2021 13:26:39 AEST ]]>
